Updating ScanTools Plus Link Runtime Only

Each release of ScanTools Plus Link SDK includes an updated version of the Runtime files. The newest Runtime files will work with a solution program built with any previous version 7.2 of ScanTools Plus Link SDK, going back to the initial release of version 6.0. See Upgrading from an Earlier Version of ScanTools Plus Link SDK.

You may occasionally need to update only the ScanTools Plus Link Runtime files and not your installed solution program. This can be done without having to remove and reinstall your program.

The Runtime installation now functions as a first-time install every time, unless explicitly removed via Add/Remove Programs or a command-line uninstallation.  Functionally, this means that if another program has already installed a version of the Runtime files on the PC, another instance of the installation will appear as if it is a first-time installation.  During installation, version values set in the application installation section of the registry will be checked and compared against the current version.  If the version already installed is newer than the version of the attempted installation, the installation will abort.  The version string is checked at the major, minor, and patch level.

Beginning with version 8.0, the installation will automatically upgrade older versions of the Runtime files to the current version and prevent older versions from installing over a newer version. This does not apply to version 7.2.

If version 7.2 of the Runtime files are being used, the existing version should be checked by querying the DisplayVersion registry value in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{D9E2A31D-01DB-4BC4-A5CF-9B03F14BA8A7} to ensure that newer files are not being overwritten
