Scantron Supports Assessments For Ohio’s 3rd Grade Reading Guarantee

The Ohio State Department of Education provides a list of approved assessments that can be used to identify students in grades K–3 who are behind in reading. Schools can use results from their chosen assessment to provide help and support that gets struggling students back on track by the end of the third grade.

Scantron’s Performance Series Reading test, including Reading Foundations for grades K–2, is identified as an approved assessment to identify a students’ current reading grade level estimate, provide suggested next steps and challenges, and demonstrate growth over time.

Performance Series is a research-based, criterion-referenced computer-adaptive test that lets K–12 educators quickly pinpoint the instructional level of students across a range of subjects (including but not limited to Reading), capture immediate results, and produce standards-based reports including suggested learning objectives on a scaled score. In addition, subsequent administrations of the test at specified testing intervals demonstrate growth in a subject and against standards.

Performance Series enables educators to identify the proficiency levels of students corresponding to state-specific standards, measure growth, understand student performance in relation to others, inform instruction, help with placement, and provide direct links to several teaching and learning resources such as Lexile, Edgenuity, Classworks, and others.

The Reading portion of Performance Series assesses students’ abilities to read passages similar to those they read in schools or in outside books, providing an authentic context for comprehension. In addition to student scores, the results provide a norm-referenced national measure. Items are developed at specific cognitive complexity levels to help ensure appropriate depth-of-knowledge consistency.
