Debugging a User Exit DLL

Dynamic debugging of a ScanTools user exit from within the Microsoft Visual Studio v.6.0 C/C++ development environment can be accomplished by following these steps:

  1. Add the ScanTools directory to the system PATH statement. (i.e. PATH=%PATH%;C:\PROGRAM FILES\SCANTRON\SCANTOOLS PLUS).
  2. In the Application Settings dialog box of ScanTools, enter the full path name to the debug build of the user exit (for example, "C:\MYEXIT\DEBUG\MYEXIT.DLL").
  3. In the project settings for the user exit, on the DEBUG tab, enter the path to the ScanTools executable (i.e. C:\PROGRAM FILES\SCANTRON\SCANTOOLS PLUS\SCANTOOLS PLUS.EXE) as the "Executable for debug session".
  4. Set breakpoints and debug normally. You see a warning that ScanTools Plus.exe does not contain debug information. You can ignore this warning.
