Setting up a Linked Server for a Data File in SQL Server

The Scantron OLE DB Provider has limited support for SQL queries. The Linked Server capability in Microsoft® SQL Server enables you to use the robust SQL query functionality of SQL Server without having to import the data.

This example is based on SQL Server 2000 SP1 and demonstrates the basic settings for using a Linked Server with the Scantron OLE DB Provider. For more information on linked servers, see the SQL Server documentation.

  1. Use the SQL Server Enterprise Manager to create a new Linked Server in SQL Server. For help on creating a new Linked Server, see the SQL Server Help.
  2. Enter the following settings on the General tab of the Linked Server Properties dialog:

    Scantron OLE DB Provider for ScanTools Plus

    Product Name

    ScanToolsPlus Data Services

    Data Source

    [Path to data file]

    Provider String

    [leave blank]

    Location

    [Path to application file]
    Example
    C:\oledb\data\z701.sds .StxAppDef

    Catalog

    [leave blank]

    NOTE: You do not need to change the Provider Options--accept the default settings.

  4. Click OK. The Linked Server is ready to accept SQL queries.
