ADO Example--Modify a data record via an ADO recordset

This example updates the first data record in the recordset. The update is immediate.

For more information regarding how the Scantron OLE DB Provider processes updates, see Considerations for updating data with Data Services.

Dim cn As New ADODB.Connection

Dim rs As New ADODB.Recordset

'*** Define the connection string

Dim cnstr As String

cnstr = cnstr & "Provider = Scantron.Oledb;"

cnstr = cnstr & "Data File = c:\program files\pearson ncs\scantools plus\data files\802 sample.dat;"

cnstr = cnstr & "App File = c:\program files\pearson ncs\scantools plus\applications\z802 .sds .StxAppDef;"

cnstr = cnstr & "Mode=Read|Write;"

cn.Open cnstr

rs.Open "select name, gender from 1", cn

rs!Name = "Joe"

rs!Gender = "Male"

MsgBox rs!Name

The same result could have been achieved by executing an update statement; but, as shown below, a where clause would be required to ensure that only the desired records were affected.

Dim cn As New ADODB.Connection

Dim cmd As New ADODB.Command

'*** Define the connection string

Dim cnstr As String

cnstr = cnstr & "Provider = Scantron.Oledb;"

cnstr = cnstr & "Data File = c:\program files\pearson ncs\scantools plus\data files\802 sample.dat;"

cnstr = cnstr & "App File = c:\program files\pearson ncs\scantools plus\applications\z802 .sds .StxAppDef;"

cnstr = cnstr & "Mode=Read|Write;"

cn.Open cnstr

cmd.CommandText = "update 1 set name = 'Joe', gender='Male' where [serial number] < 5"

cmd.ActiveConnection = cn

cmd.Execute

cn.Close
